Counties

The interactive map and table below display data for Alabama general-admission hospitals, aggregated by county. The NCHS field refers to the NCHS rural-urban classification discussed in the Introduction. The field Ratio is the number of hospital beds per 1000 population in the county.

Map

The base layer consists of the 67 counties in Alabama. Counties in shades of blue are urban and counties in shades of orange are rural. Jefferson County in dark blue, is Alabama's only large central metro county. The counties in blue are large fringe metro counties; the counties in the lighter blue are medium metro counties; the counties in the lightest blue are small metro counties. The counties in light orange are micropolitan counties; and the counties in the darker orange are noncore counties. The hospitals are shown as a point layer: the red dots are acute care hospitals, yellow dots are critical access hospitals, and the purple dots are rural emergency hosptials.
